Star In The West QAL – Month 3

Welcome to Month 3 for the Star In The West BOM Quilt-Along, brought to you by Swan Amity Studios and Gorram Quilts!

We are very excited to be working with our sponsor, American Made Brand fabrics, for this QAL. AMB make beautiful solid fabrics that are rich in color and so soft. The fabric is sourced and manufactured in the United States. Coincidentally, they’re also located in Seattle. They will be providing a few prizes throughout the year, but more will be revealed later.

Month 3’s pattern will be emailed out later this morning. If you don’t receive it, please check your junk folder and then send us an email or comment below, and we’ll investigate.

For Month 1 and 2, we assembled the center star. Month 3 is our first border. We will be doing 2 sets of flying geese borders, 1 for the right side and 1 for the bottom.

Here are my unattached borders in the AMB solids.

Once you have made your borders, you attach them onto the center star. One thing I love about this quilt is how you add the borders as you make them, so there isn’t a “month 12 – assemble everything you’ve made over the past year” step.

We have a Flick group that you are welcome to join and share your progress.

Also, if you post on social media, please use #StarInTheWestQuilt.

If you haven’t signed up yet, you still can through Swan Amity’s website. It’s only $24 for the whole year.

We’re looking forward to seeing your evergrowing quilt. Please let us know if you have any questions. Happy quilting!

For Month 1, we made parts of the Center Star. This month, we are making the remaining sections and assembling the star.

For this month, you will be making one pinwheel for the center and then 8 corner rectangle/rectangle units. There are also 4 sashing strips to attach around the star.

Here are mine, in the AMB solids. All of the fabrics are beautiful, but I really love that dark green color 8.

For the rectangle/rectangle units, you make it by sewing two rectangles together (go figure). The instructions provide a few methods to do this (pro-tip: if you just eyeball it, you’ll get it right about 33% of the time). Once I stopped being stubborn and eyeballing it, my favorite method is to lay the rectangles together and shoot the top one (purple) slightly to the left. Then you can make a mark in the bottom corner where it meets the teal (I used my white pen). Shift it back, and when you’re sewing, that gives you a mark to aim towards. Or, use the ruler to draw the entire line to make it even easier to sew along. Additional pro-tip: Make sure to check the directions of the r/r units before cutting (I’ve only messed that up once in 3 versions of this quilt).

Once you have made the pinwheel and r/r units, sew them together. Attach the border strips and ta-da! You have your center star.

For Month 1, we are making part of the “center” star (I say center even though it’s in the top left of the quilt).

SitW Month 1 Section

You will be making 2 sets of 4 blocks, for 8 total blocks. Once you are finished, hang onto them until Month 2, when you will make the remaining parts of the center star.

Here are mine, in the AMB solids.

And here they are laid out. I showed them to a non-quilting buddy who was confused about why there was a hole in the center.

QAL 2016 – Sponsor announcement

I’m still here! The last month has been crazy. I am currently frantically finishing Christmas gifts (every year, same thing). There will be pictures of those in the next few weeks.

In the meantime, Swan and I are putting the finishing touches on the QAL patterns. We received some very exciting news. American Made Brands is going to sponsor the QAL! For those of you who don’t know, AMB is a US based (Seattle, coincidentally) fabric manufacturer who makes the most beautiful solid fabrics that I’ve ever worked with. For the last 2 years, any time solids come up, I mention (gush about) AMB. I have used them in a few quilts: Star Gazing and Meadow Mist Mystery, plus a handful of UFOs.

When we found out about the sponsorship, that meant that I got to choose from their 62 fabrics to pick what I wanted for the quilt. 2 nights ago, I connected my computer to my 47″ television and, using Inkscape, I played with the AMB fabrics to come up with a color scheme. I forbid myself from using white, black, beige, or grey for the background, to get out of my comfort zone. This is what I ended up designing:

StarInTheWest AMB

The fabrics have been requested and are on their way!

Here is a picture of the coloring in progress on my television. Sorry for the lighting: dark room + bright tv = poor lighting for a picture.

The QAL kicks off on January 2. There is still plenty of time to sign up via Swan Amity’s website. It is only $24 for the entire year. There will be a Flickr area to share your quilt progress, and AMB will be providing prizes. We don’t know what they will be just yet, but tentatively we’re looking at quarterly prizes.

Happy quilting!

2016 Quilt Along Announcement

It’s time for Big Announcement 2016!!

In conjunction with Swan Amity Studios, I will be doing a Block of the Month / Quilt Along for 2016.

The BOM will be Star in the West which Swan and I originally ran as a BOM at our LQS. I did my version in greys, named 10 Shades of Grey.

The BOM will start on January 2 and run for 12 months. Each month you will be emailed a pattern. There will be a Flickr group to share images of your quilt top in progress. I will also be sharing some of them on my blog.

The patterns for the entire series is only $24. You can signup at Swan’s website. And then check back here on January 2 when the first pattern comes out.

Happy quilting!

Star Gazing BOM – pattern

Hi everyone! I am back from Asia and ready to get back into quilting.

To kick it off, this is Star Gazing. I’ve mentioned this once or twice but this is the first picture. A few years ago, I worked at a quilt shop and we did sampler after sampler BOMs before we said “I can’t do another sampler quilt!” which was when we (mostly Swan) started designing our own BOM. Typically, Swan designs, Kathie figures out how the heck to construct what Swan came up with, and then I do the graphics on the computer. Here is our newest, Star Gazing.

Right now, we have draft 1 for all of the patterns written up with pictures. While I was gone, Kathie and Swan were testing and editing. Swan’s version is limited to 8 colors since it’s easier to kit a BOM with fewer colors. But since I’m just doing my own for me, I have no color restrictions, so this is mine in all of its 16-ish color glory. I’m primarily using American Made Solids with a few Kona Cottons when I needed a certain color.

I will be posting pictures of each block. The pattern will be available through either Swan Amity Studios or possibly Quilters Market in Tucson… I’m not sure what the plan is; I just do the technical bits.

10 Shades: Through Month 7

I spent yesterday evening working on 10 Shades and am now through Month 7.

It seems like lately I’ve been doing a lot of designing (and shopping) and not much actual construction of anything. So last night was a construction night. I finished attaching the two pinwheel rows to the right and bottom. I then made a bunch of HSTs for the snakes on the right and made the bottom stripes.

There are 5 months worth of blocks left. There’s also an optional bottom border. So I’m halfway finished!

10 Shades: through Month 3

Happy New Year!

Not much of an exciting update today. I’ve been working on 10 Shades and have added month 3 to the center (since it was originally designed as a BOM, each of the rows are months or parts of months). Month 3 is the right and bottom border of flying geese.

Star in the West quilt Monsoon Sunset Sunsets BOM Block of the Month Southwestern Pinwheel Geometric Flying Geese Black White Grey

I am starting to assemble the rows for months 4 and 5. Month 4 is on the right and 5 is on the left. I’m a little concerned it’s a bit too much white, but we’ll see.  I should have those assembled and attached this weekend!

10 Shades and Star Gazing BOMs

I have an exciting announcement! I will be doing the graphics for a Block of the Month pattern series!

When I worked at Bella Quiltworks, two of my coworkers, Kathie and Swan (of Swan Amity Studios) designed a Block of the Month (BOM). We were tired of the traditional BOM sampler quilts where you make 12 blocks, maybe add some sashing, and tada, quilt (some examples here). They’re all well and good, but we needed something else. So Swan took some graph paper and designed Sense of Direction and Kathie figured out how in the heck to construct it. I was responsible for doing the computer work and making the graphics for the patterns. Here is my finished Sense of Direction quilt:

For the next year, Team SwaKaCa designed and put together another BOM for the shop named Star in the West. The quilt starts in the top left and then each month a border is added to the quilt. This is from Swan’s website where she sells the completed BOM pattern.

Star in the West quilt Monsoon Sunset Sunsets BOM Block of the Month Southwestern Pinwheel Geometric Flying Geese

For mine, I’m doing it in greys. I love colors and patterned fabric and for the last year or so, I’ve been going through a grey phase as well as a solids phase. It’s been a bit odd, especially for those who know me. I picked out 10 white/grey fabrics and am using the black Moda Grunge fabric (not pictured) for the background. And the quilt’s name is 10 Shades of Grey. Someone suggested it as a joke and it stuck.

Star in the West quilt Monsoon Sunset Sunsets BOM Block of the Month Southwestern Pinwheel Geometric Flying Geese Black White Grey

Since I’m getting ready to work on the new BOM, it seemed a prudent time to finally start on 10 Shades. I spent a few days cutting all of the black background for the whole quilt (benefit of having the whole pattern!) and assembled the “center” star.

Star in the West quilt Monsoon Sunset Sunsets BOM Block of the Month Southwestern Pinwheel Geometric Flying Geese Black White Grey

For the new BOM, I can’t post the pattern since it’s a work in progress and not my property, but it is really awesome. It involves a lot of interlocking stars which is how it got its working title Star Gazing. I will be doing my version in American Brand Solids. They’re made in Seattle and the colors are yummy. Plus Fabric.com was having a December sale and I got them for 25% off – score! I have a few more greens coming, I already own some purples, and the background will be a few shades of grey, but everything is solid.
